Loan Types Reference

A structured reference for the main types of student loans — federal (current and legacy) and private — with key servicing implications for each.

Lesson 1 of 14Federal Loans (Currently Issued)

Direct Subsidized Loan

For undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need. The government pays interest while the borrower is in school at least half-time, during grace periods, and during deferment.

Why it matters in servicing

Servicers must track enrollment status carefully. Interest subsidy periods must be correctly applied and removed. Tracking these periods inaccurately is a compliance failure.
